JOSEPH PILATES

JOSEPH PILATES

Joseph Pilates was born in Mönchengladbach, Germany in 1883. He was a sickly, fragile child who suffered from illnesses since his early years, but it was his strong mind-set that helped him to recover. He grew up studying the body and physical systems, which were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century in Europe. He developed his method of training, “the Pilates Method”, through his own insight of strengthening and overcoming weaknesses.

Joseph was highly inspired by his parents, his father being a sportsman and his mother working with alternative medicine. He dedicated his time in the research of the dynamic of animal movement to find out a system of exercising and strengthening the body in an efficient way, to improve his health and vitality. His mindset helped him to prove his belief of his Zeitgeist. ‘It’s the mind that builds the body’.

When he reached adolescence, he transformed himself into a strong athlete, excelling in several sports. Besides the knowledge he acquired overcoming his own weaknesses, his strong mind-set, played a big role on his success. His goal was, after taking his own physical condition to its best, to inspire and help others achieve the same.

LOVE BOAT-CLARA AND JOSEPH

On the boat ride to the States, Joseph met his future love and wife Clara. She was a nurse and kindergarten teacher and as his partner, she helped him with the development and teaching of the method. Shortly after their arrival in New York, they opened the first Pilates studio in the world, in the same building as George Balanchine’s NYC Ballet studio. It did not take long to establish the effectiveness of the method in that all the dancers of the NYC Ballet were trained by Joseph Pilates. His method made a big impact on them and their techniques.

Devoting their lives to improve the exercises and equipment, Clara and Joseph worked with people with different physical challenges to make the method accessible and beneficial to everybody. Their vital energy and physical fitness in their eighties showed them as living proof of the success of the pure method. Joseph passed away in 1967, Clara continued working on the method and the studio was already known as the Pilates Studio.

ROMANA KRYZANOWSKA

ROMANA KRYZANOWSKA

In 1941 Balanchine sent one of his dancers, Romana Kryzanowska, to study with Joseph Pilates because she had an ankle injury. She not only recovered from her injury, she transformed and strengthened her entire body under Joseph Pilates’ instructions. For many years she stayed in the studio and eventually taught side by side with Joseph. He consequently chose her to be his protegee. When he died in 1967, she was charged to run his studio and carry on his legacy.

A few years after Joseph’s death, Romana was asked by Clara to take the lead of the studio. After Clara passed away in 1977, Romana became the guardian and ultimate representative of the authentic Pilates Method. She devoted her life to carry on Joseph and Clara’s work, the mandate inherited to this day by her daughter, Sari Mejia Santo.

SARI MJIA SANTO

SARI MJIA SANTO

Sari, Romana Kyranowska’ s daughter emigrated from Peru to the United States to pursue her career as a dancer in the School of American Ballet.
Her talent for choreography led her to tour the world as a choreographer and as soloist for the Goldovsdky Opera Company.

Sari suffered from rheumatic fever with the age of 9. This caused many physical complications and damage to her legs and feet. Romana, who at the time was already an accomplished instructor of the work of Joseph Pilates, taught Sari the Pilates method to rebuild her strength and rehabilitate her body. From her youngest age, Sari assisted Joseph Pilates in his studio and became an instructor under his watchful eye.

Currently Sari is the master teacher of the certification seminars at Romana’s Pilates® which she owns and operates along with her daughter Daria.

Romana passed away in 2013. Her insight on the work lives on through her daughter Sari Mejia Santo, who trained with Joseph and Clara Pilates, her Grand-daughter Daria Pace and a handful of Grand Master Instructors, such as Juanita Lopez, Cythnia Lochard, Javier Perez-Pont, Phillipe Taupin and the pioneer of Pilates in Europe, Marjorie Oron.
